The Three-Step Exit Planning Roadmap

A human-centered approach to navigating one of life’s biggest transitions.

Exiting a business is more than a financial transaction — it’s a profound identity shift. My methodology focuses on the emotional, relational, and purpose‑driven side of transition, giving owners a structured way to navigate who they are now, who they’re becoming, and how to move through the exit with clarity and steadiness.

[1] Clarify Who You are Beyond the Business

Most owners underestimate the emotional weight of stepping away from the identity they’ve held for decades.

This first step creates space to explore who they are outside the role of “business owner.

This includes:

  • Understanding the psychology of transition
  • Identifying identity anchors that will remain after the exit
  • Naming fears, hopes, and the internal narratives shaping the process
  • Beginning to imagine a future not defined by the business

This step prevents the post‑exit identity crisis that derails so many owners.

[2] Align Your Future with What Matters Most

Once identity is clarified, we shift into designing a life that reflects the owner’s deepest values — not just their financial goals.

This includes:

  • A values and purpose audit
  • Relationship mapping (family, spouse, key connections)
  • Health, wellbeing, and lifestyle priorities
  • Exploration of meaning, contribution, and “what’s next”

This step ensures the exit leads toward something fulfilling, not just away from the business.

[3] Navigate the Emotional Realities of Transition

Exits are emotionally complex — especially during the deal and in the months that follow. This step provides a structured, confidential space to process the non‑financial issues that M&A teams rarely address.

This includes:

  • Managing uncertainty, grief, and loss of role
  • Staying grounded during negotiations and decision points
  • Preparing for the psychological “void” after the deal closes
  • Rebuilding rhythm, identity, and purpose post‑exit

Note: This step supports owners through the entire emotional arc of transition — before, during, and after the deal.
